The concept of time is challenging for children. My mom always had the answer. If it was a road trip, time was measured in Sesame Streets and Barneys. From West Hartford to Garden City it took us 2 Sesame Streets and a Barney to complete the exactly 2 1/2 hour drive.. From Saratoga to Tulsa it was 21 Sesame Streets, but I think I was old enough that we measured it in Sex and the Citys (42). But when we were counting the number of days until something, we counted in sleeps and wake ups.
My family arrives in Khon Kaen in two sleeps and a wake up! In only two sleeps and a wake up I will see my family! I am ecstatic. It feels like just yesterday when my students helped me start the countdown of 63 days until their arrival.
When I think about their visit, I am very excited, but not in the way I would have guessed. I don't miss them. Okay, that doesn't sound right. Of course I miss my family. I miss seeing them and being with them, but I'm not homesick. I don't constantly desire the comforts of home. I am loving my life. I am loving living in Thailand. I am not excited to see my family because I miss them, I am excited to see my family to show them my life. I want them to see my city. I want them to meet my friends, see my school, eat at my favorite noodle stand and feel the heat of the Thai sun. I want them to see how happy I am. I want them to enjoy Thailand as much as I do.
Ahhh! I am only two sleeps and a wake up away from them being here! Okay, maybe I do miss them.
This is a photo from Kelly and Dave's wedding. We were all just very happy that day.
Have a great visit with them, Meaghan. They're probably having NO sleeps and all wake-ups, so go easy on them the first couple of days.
